Home working – What Happened There?

Many years ago all the talk was about home working and that the world of work was about to change forever. It was predicted that, with the advent of technology, less people would need to commute to their jobs with many working remotely – as long as they had access to a telephone and a computer. So, what happened? Undoubtedly, there are many more opportunities for a whole range of businesses with remote working, myself included, but many people are still travelling into the office day after day even though they could work remotely. Why hasn’t there been the dramatic shift we all expected?

I too am very disappointed by this.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the roads were less busy and most people who 'can' work from home (which is an awful lot), did work from home.

I think there are too many fears; fears from the employer about loosing control and productivity, and fears from employees about having to be more responsible for their workload, and also the fear of loneliness and temptation to not work during the day.

Yet its proven that people who work from home tend to be happier in their work. Saying that this is people who choose to work that way, and often s/emp so of course it would suit them.

I'm sure there are many employees who would love this opportunity and thrive in it if only employers would offer it.

Employers also have the option to trial the situation and remove people who aren't 'working out' back into the office environment.

They could coach and support workers to work well at home, arrange socials/meetings with colleagues to stop them becoming lonely as well as encouraging IM with colleagues.

Over time they would find this would save them money in office space and costs (heating/lighting etc).

You see I dream of a utopia where everyone works from home and the planet is so much nicer as a result!

Small Business – All About Risk

I saw an article the other day that stated that if you are thinking about some new idea for your business, and no one has tried this before, then you shouldn’t do it. Of course, it’s important to do your research so that you know what you are letting yourself in for but if you don’t put yourself out there then what’s the point? There’s a difference between calculated risk and an ‘off the wall’ idea – still, ‘off the wall’ is good too. After all, isn’t setting up and running a business all about risk?

Differentiation – What’s The Next Step?

I think long and hard about my business and how I can differentiate it from the competition. When someone asks you ‘so what makes you different?’ what do you say? We all know that price, quality and range are differentiators. I certainly don’t want to be the cheapest – I am a great believer in quality of service and I believe that clients appreciate the value associated with that. But how do you go deeper and differentiate even further once you have established that quality sets you apart? That’s the real challenge. I’d be interested to hear any thoughts on this.
